Tapography™ — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 August 2026
This policy explains what information Tapography ("the Service", "we", "I") collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. Tapography is a geography quiz that runs as a Discord Activity and as a browser game at tapography.app. In the browser you can play as a guest, or sign in with Discord or Google to keep your scores across devices and join parties — private leaderboards you share with friends via a link, no Discord required.
Information collected
When you play through Discord, using Discord's
identify permission only, we receive and store:
- Your Discord user ID and display name (global name or username).
- The ID of the Discord server you launch or play the game in, so we can build that server's leaderboard.
- Your gameplay data: the date and mode played, the map coordinates you guess, distances, per-round and total scores, completion times, and derived streaks and yearly totals.
We do not request or receive your email address, your Discord messages, your friends list, or any server content. Your Discord access token is used only momentarily to confirm your identity and is held briefly in memory — it is never written to disk.
When you sign in with Google in the browser, using the
openid profile scopes only, we receive and store your Google
account identifier and your display name.
We do not request or receive your email address.
When you play in a browser as a guest (no sign-in), we store:
- A randomly generated guest identifier saved in a cookie on your device, so your in-progress game survives a page refresh.
- A display name, only if you choose to set one (for example, to join a party).
- The same gameplay data as above. Guest play is kept private to your device and never appears on a leaderboard unless you set a name and join a party — in which case your scores become visible to that party's members, as described below.
If you sign in after playing as a guest on the same device, your guest progress is merged into the account you sign in as, and the guest record is removed.
If you turn on daily reminders (the "Remind me daily" checkbox), we additionally store:
- A push subscription for that browser — an anonymous address issued by your browser's maker (Apple, Google or Mozilla) plus the keys needed to encrypt a message to it. It identifies a browser, not a person, and it cannot be used to reach you anywhere else.
- Your device's timezone, so the reminder arrives in the morning where you actually are.
Reminders are off by default and are only ever sent after you tick that box. We do not ask for or store a phone number or an email address for this or for anything else. Untick the box (or turn off notifications for the site in your browser) and the subscription is deleted immediately. It is also deleted automatically if your browser stops accepting it — for example after you clear site data or uninstall the browser.
Cookies
Tapography uses only functional cookies — no advertising, tracking, or analytics cookies of any kind:
tg_guest— remembers a browser guest's game.tg_session— keeps you signed in after logging in with Discord or Google.- Two short-lived cookies used only during the sign-in redirect, to keep it secure and return you to the right page.
How information is used
- To run the game, save your progress, and calculate scores and streaks.
- To display leaderboards. Your display name and scores are visible to other members of a group you play in — a Discord server, or a party you join via a share link. That is the point of a leaderboard among friends.
- To send the daily reminder, if you asked for one. It says the new puzzle is up and nothing else — no marketing, and never more than once a day. If you have already played that day, it isn't sent at all.
How information is shared
- We do not sell, rent, or trade your information.
- We do not share it with advertisers or use third-party analytics.
- The external services involved are Discord and, if you use it, Google, which process your sign-in under Discord's and Google's own privacy policies.
- If you turn on daily reminders, the notification is delivered through the push service run by your browser's maker (Apple, Google or Mozilla), because that is the only way any website can reach a browser. They see the encrypted message and the anonymous subscription address; the contents are encrypted so that only your browser can read them.
- Leaderboard standings (display name + score) are shown to other members of the same Discord server or party, as described above.
Data storage and retention
Data is stored in a private database on a personally operated server. It is kept for as long as needed to run the game and show historical leaderboards. You can ask to have your data deleted at any time (see Contact).
Security
The Service is served over HTTPS and reasonable measures are taken to protect your data. However, no method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, and no guarantee of absolute security can be made.
Children
Tapography is not directed to children under 13. In line with Discord's Terms of Service, you must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country) to use it.
Your choices
Daily reminders can be turned off at any time by unticking "Remind me
daily" on the intro screen, which deletes the subscription there and
then; blocking notifications for the site in your browser stops them too.
The Discord reminder is separate and is opted out of with
/mute.
If you use Discord, you can delete all of your data
yourself at any time by running the /forget command — it
immediately and permanently removes your scores, streaks, round history,
reminder subscriptions, and leaderboard standings. In the browser you can sign out at any time
from the account panel. To delete a Google or guest account's data, or to
request access to the data associated with your account, contact me using
the details below and I will remove it. You can also stop using the Service
at any time.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated from time to time. Changes take effect when posted on this page, and the "Last updated" date above will change.
